Watson, Sonics defeat Grizzlies 108-101

Earl Watson scored a season-high 26 points and Wally Szczerbiak had 24, including the go-ahead score with 31 seconds remaining, to rally the Seattle SuperSonics to a 108-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night.

The Sonics, who were without flu-ridden rookie star Kevin Durant, roared back from a 19-point deficit early in the second half to win for the first time in four games against Memphis this season.

Rudy Gay scored 23 points and Hakim Warrick had 22 for the Grizzlies, who lost their 10th consecutive road game and are 1-6 since trading star Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 1.

Gay was just 9-for-23 from the field and shot airballs on two long jump shots in the final minute, leaving him wincing and tapping the top of his head in frustration.

The Chronicle Local News Blog

Sometimes it's edifying, enlightening, even fun to put local issues into a global context. It may be a small world after all, but things aren't necessarily the same all around the world.

Consider, for instance, the hoo-hah raised by North Bay residents over the proposal to levy a $1 to $2 congestion-based toll on Doyle Drive, the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge. The toll would secure a federal grant for Doyle Drive and provide enough funding to get the unsafe, 70-year-old structure replaced.

Highway robbery, cry the folks from the North Bay, especially affluent Marin County.

Good thing they don't live outside London, which charges a congestion charge or cordon toll, essentially an entry fee, for vehicles driving into the city's central business district.

Ads take flight: Madison airport seeks to stem passenger dropoff by ...

It's all about the journey.

That's the theme of the Dane County Regional Airport's first general advertising campaign designed to increase awareness of nonstop destinations, ease of use and enhanced terminal facilities.

The journey for some, however, has been rough as the Madison airport continues to struggle with flight cancellations, delays and competition from the Milwaukee and Chicago airports.

VUSD officials recommend waiting to open high schools

She said failing to open the new campus on time is a disservice to the students and teachers who are now crammed into Vista Unified's two overcrowded high schools, Vista High and Rancho Buena Vista High."We sent the message to the community that we were going to build this school," she said. "As a board, it's our responsibility to get it opened."The sooner the district opens the schools, the better, Herrera said, because it doesn't appear the state's budget problems are going to clear up anytime soon.Gibson and Herrera agree that the district needs to do something to ease overcrowding at its two large high schools, which each have more than 3,000 students. However, they disagree about how to do it.For years, Gibson has pushed for the district to use existing facilities for the magnet schools instead of building a campus on the 66-acre site in eastern Oceanside.
