| Controversy Over Northwestern Journo Dean's 'Unnamed Sources'
The dean of journalism at Northwestern University seems to have gotten himself in a bit of a sticky wicket, as it were. Apparently, John Lavine, the dean of the Medill School of Journalism, has been indulging in the use of unattributed and unnamed sources in his columns for the Medill alumni magazine and 16 NU journo instructors aren't very happy about it. Not only are they not happy about it, but according to the Chicago Tribune they are demanding that the dean prove that he didn't make his quotes up out of whole cloth. You know the journalist's favorite source, don't you? It's the "unnamed source," the "anonymous quote" and the famed "deep throat" sources that journalists make out to be "protecting" from discovery. This sort of source has a long history in the kind of journalism of whistleblowers or muckrakers that have been increasingly popular since Watergate.
Kehoe aims to raise money for firefighting
While wide agreement exists that more money and firefighting resources are needed, where that money should come from is always hotly debated. And Kehoe's legislation drew criticism from taxpayer advocates Wednesday.Kehoe said in an interview Wednesday she is proposing a one-time fee on new homes built in the backcountry, as well as an annual fee on existing backcountry homes, to fund fire protection and prevention programs of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection or CalFire. The senator said she has yet to determine the amount of either fee and how much money would be generated.Kehoe said she is also seeking an amendment to the state Constitution that would empower cities, counties and fire districts to raise taxes for firefighting if ballot measures garner 55 percent of the vote.
4-County rates to increase 7 percent
Beginning April 1, customers of the 4-County Electric Power Association may be paying as much as $7 more on their power bills. The Tennessee Valley Authority voted at it's Feb. 15 board of directors meeting to increase its rates by 7 percent, Allegra Brigham, CEO of 4-County, reported Tuesday at the monthly 4-County board of directors meeting. The increase is not as high as the 9 percent increase predicted at last month's 4-county meeting, but it will mean a $4-to-$7 increase per month on customers' power bills, said 4-County Chief Financial Officer Marcus Stone."We don't have actual numbers as far as exactly how much more each customer will be paying each month," said Stone. "But we are fairly certain most people will be in the $4-to-$7 increase range depending on kilowatt-hours used." .
Megson tackles fans head on
Bolton Wanderers Supporters Association chairman Tony Pearson said "the jury is out" on Megson but called on fellow fans to give the former West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Nottingham Forest manager time to get things right. "I don't know whether he has got the kind of profile we were hoping a manager would have. We have to accept it. Somebody has to take charge of the team." Mr Pearson said the key to the club's success in the past was stability and that Megson had a clean slate because he was not associated with the Allardyce regime. He added: "When Sam Allardyce arrived from Notts County as a manager, his credentials were not that developed at that point and look what he achieved. "I don't think it's fair to totally write Megson off this early in his career.

Fire displaces 4, causes $60,000 in damage to house
A fire at a Northwest Roanoke home displaced four people Sunday, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS Department spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury. Fire crews were called to the 500 block of Chestnut Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. They found heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story structure. Bradbury said that the fire started in a second-floor bedroom. Crews quickly extinguished the blaze, which was contained to the upstairs, she said. The fire was under control by 1:50 a.m. The first floor sustained water damage, Bradbury said. The fire has been ruled accidental and was caused by a lighter, she said. Damage is estimated at $60,000, Bradbury said. The four people who were displaced are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Budweiser, Miller…and Tsingtao?
Crown Imports, the largest beer importer in the U.S., sells more Tsingtao beer every year during Chinese New Year than any other period. This year, it's been pulling out all the stops. Chicago-based Crown (a subsidiary of Constellation Brands (STZ)) has persuaded Costco Wholesale (COST) to carry China's most famous beer in several stores in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest on a trial basis during celebrations of the Year of the Rat, which started on Feb. 7. If Tsingtao sells well, Costco may consider stocking the Chinese import beer year-round. Crown Imports has also signed up celebrity chef Martin Yan to kick off a marketing blitz in a bid to expand Tsingtao outside Chinatown and into downtown U.S.A. Tsingtao is China's oldest and most famous beer, with a 13% market share at home.
