Nelson sees Webber as full-time starter

OAKLAND — Chris Webber has started 819 of 822 games in his NBA career, and he's not going to begin coming off the bench now.

Warriors coach Don Nelson said Monday that beginning with Thursday's game against the Chicago Bulls, Webber will be his fourth permanent starter, taking a slot alongside Baron Davis, Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson.

Since Nelson and Chris Mullin, the Warriors executive vice president, feel that one of Webber's greatest strengths comes in enhancing the production of his four teammates on the floor, what better way to maximize that trait than by putting him with Golden State's best players?

"I think he should start," Nelson said. "I'm planning on starting him every game."

Nelson said he'll primarily use either Andris Biedrins or Al Harrington as his fifth starter, with Matt Barnes mixed in when the Warriors are looking to go small.

Oh Kei, Roddick up next for teen

SAN JOSE — Consider Kei Nishikori's position for just a minute.

First, the soft-spoken 18-year-old stuns the tennis world with last week's surprising defeat of James Blake in the final of the Delray Beach International, making him the first Japanese player to win an ATP event in nearly 16 years.

The feat sent his stock rising so rapidly even a stay at a San Jose hotel required a quick name change on the room in order to avoid getting besieged with phone calls.

And now he has Andy Roddick, the world's sixth-ranked player, waiting at his door.

Nishikori insists he doesn't have to pinch himself, but there was a point during Wednesday's 7-5, 6-3 victory over Diego Hartfield at the SAP Open where he had to remind himself to keep going.

"I want to play Roddick; that's why I won today," Nishikori said.

Lubavitch Chabad defers its dream

For months, people living near the southwest corner of Clark and Chestnut wondered about the hole in the ground. The owner, Lubavitch Chabad, planned a Center for Jewish Life on the site, but couldn't raise the money.

Apparently deferring its dream of a new building, the organization has a tentative agreement to sell the property to Chicago-based LG Development Group. Ariel Weissberg, attorney for Lubavitch Chabad, said LG wants to build a 15- to 20-story condo building with just two high-end units per floor. The Chabad, he said, may look at other sites to build a spiritual sanctuary.

The property is part of a planned development that requires any developer to obtain the consent of neighbors before building. Talks are under way, Weissberg said, noting that downtown Ald.

Erratic Gunman's 'Mindless Violence'

Former graduate student Stephen Kazmierczak, 27, wounded 15 others before shooting himself after he failed to take his medication.

Mr Obama described the Northern Illinois University attack as "heartbreaking" and offered his sympathies to the loved ones of the victims.

Kazmierczak was armed with five handguns during Thursday's ambush attack inside a lecture hall.

Two of the weapons, a pump-action Remington shotgun and a Glock 9mm handgun, were purchased legally less than a week ago, authorities said.

Investigators recovered 48 shell casings and six shotgun shells following the attack, campus Police Chief Donald Grady said.
